Managing
Definition: directing in order reach goals and accomplish tasks.
Criteria: organized, flexible, trustworthy, ethical, respectable/respectful
Example:
I have not had many opportunities to manage a group of people thus far in my life, but one experience did stick out. As a member of staff for a freshmen leadership organization, I have had many opportunities to lead and manage freshmen, but not other people my age. When my committee partner and I got assigned the task of planning and organizing the revelation night for PREP, we were excited to lead it. Revelation night was the first night that all of the new members of PREP would meet each other and figure out which socials they were in. My partner and I knew that we had to make this night awesome in order to make a great first impression on the freshmen. This was also our first event to plan on our own, so we wanted to impress the rest of staff.
What we decided to do was a scavenger hunt where the socials would compete against each other. We would assign other members of staff a social to hang out with for the night before they met their social leaders. This meant that my partner and I had to manage the fourteen other members of staff. This was quite a task since it meant that we had to keep track of every member of staff and all of the freshmen throughout the evening while they were competing in the scavenger hunt. We had to really know what we were talking about since they would all be coming to us with questions.
My partner and I put in a lot of time planning this event and making sure that it was completely organized. There were of course a few complications. While planning, we did not take into account that certain groups would do the activities at every station during the scavenger hunt faster than other groups, so every group did not leave the various stations at the same time. This was not a huge issue at all because the point of the scavenger hunt was to get rid of some of the awkwardness with the nervous freshmen. We also had a few freshmen show up late and had to figure out where their group was. This also was not detrimental because we had every freshman’s name on a master list organized into their groups and various locations.
The rest of the evening went perfectly. My partner and I were able to help and answer any questions that members of staff and freshmen had. I am very grateful that I had such a wonderful partner to work with and that we were prepared for the event. This made managing others so much easier and will be something that I use in the future as a guide.
