Creating New Opportunities
Definition: to discover or come up with something new.
Criteria: has initiative, passionate, futuristic, a visionary, and action-based
Example:
This was a difficult topic to reflect on. After discussing Creating New Opportunities in class, I realized that throughout most of my life I had only really engaged in opportunities that were already there rather than creating entirely new ones. Some activities that I have further engaged in are sports in high school, like moving up every year into leadership positions. Another activity is moving up in PREP, Fish Camp, and FBI. Moving up into leadership positions in these three organizations have made my entire college experience as incredible as it is. I guess you could say that joining them in the first place created new opportunities, but to me they seem like opportunities that were already there.
After really thinking about what creating a new opportunity meant, I came up with a very simple, yet important example. This example is deciding to go to Texas A&M. This example seems very obvious, but it is the best decision I have made thus far in my life. I had many options of schools that I could attend following graduation. None of them quite competed with A&M, though. I knew that I wanted to attend a school with a ranked business school that was also in Texas. This basically left me with two options, Texas A&M or The University of Texas. Well needless to say it was an obvious choice. Bye UT. I never saw myself going to UT or wearing that awful color, burnt orange. Once I allowed A&M to become a very real option, it did not take me long to realize that it was where I belonged. I visited the campus and MAYS twice before applying. I did not grow up as an Aggie and no one in my family or anyone I was close to attended Texas A&M. It only took two visits for me to see how incredible this school is.
When I officially applied September of my senior year of high school, I knew I had made the right choice. I was to be automatically accepted due to the top 10% rule, but was still SO excited when my letter finally came.
Two years later and I am still confident that I made the right decision. Coming to A&M has provided the most amazing opportunities, allowed me to meet incredible people, and created the best memories. Not a day goes by that I do not thank God for leading me here and allowing me to realize that this is exactly where I need to be. Coming to college is really scary and it is impossible not to feel doubt, but the people here do not allow you to feel doubt for very long. The loving and welcoming atmosphere is overwhelming and so meaningful. I am beyond grateful and beyond blessed to be a part of something bigger than myself like the 12th man and everything it has to offer.
